Updates are important, so instead of checking boxes each day for updates (which you can do by the way, its just time consuming) you can use services or packages to update them for you, such as ‘unattended-upgrades’, but if you just want to be notified when updates occur and what packages they are then I might have the tool for you.

Linux Update Notifier, simple script that basically checks your system for updates to packages and then sends off an email to you. It runs as a cron job every 11pm as well, so you can just install it and let it go do it’s thing.
